In the USA, Christmas shopping season begins on Black Friday. Err.. actually, we take that back. Black Friday USED TO BE when holiday shopping began, but during the last few years it was advanced by about 24 hours on to Thanksgiving day. Many online and local retailers begin their Black Friday shopping spree as early as Thursday, thanksgiving day, nowadays. These sales include not only electronics, clothes and toys, but also household items like memory foam mattresses, mattress toppers and adjustable beds.
What’s the best time of the year to buy a mattress?
You will see various online retailers and mattress stores insisting that best mattress deals are seen on either “Black Friday” or “Cyber Monday”. The truth of the matter is that mattresses go on sale throughout the year. You’re bound to see deals on memory foam mattresses and memory foam mattress toppers not only on Black Friday and Cyber Monday, but also during other major holiday sales events like “Presidents’ Day weekend”, “Labor Day weekend”, and “Memorial Day weekend”. However, if you’re looking to save money on a memory foam mattress or mattress topper during the Christmas holiday season, there’s no doubt that you’ll be able to save a ton thanks to Black Friday memory foam mattress deals. “Well, what about Cyber Monday?” you ask. Traditionally, Black Friday is all about offline shopping and Cyber Monday is about online shopping. However, nowadays, some people do all their Black Friday shopping without leaving their computer chairs! “But you can’t shop mattresses online, can you?” you ask. Not really! Nowadays, you get a ton of online deals on latex, memory foam and inner spring mattresses. Although you’d think that mattresses cannot be shipped to your doorstep after online ordering, it is actually a pretty common thing nowadays. You order not only your iPad and GPS and groceries online, you also order your mattress and mattress toppers online these days. They are vacuum packed, compressed and get shipped to your doorstep within days or placing an online order. In other words, memory foam mattress deals are not uncommon for Cyber Monday. Shop online on Cyber Monday, find the best mattress deal, place your order, and you might even be sleeping on the mattress by Green Monday 🙂
Local mattress stores or online stores?
This is a difficult one. One of the traditional rules of mattress selection is that “you should always sleep on the mattress and find out how it feels before you buy it”. You can only do that with the local mattress store; as of 2015 you can’t do that online, but soon you may be able to do that too online 😆 In reality, the mattress that you’re sleeping on at the mattress store may or may not be properly ‘broken in’. If it’s a brand new, just released model, chances are that it’s not ‘broken in’ yet. In contrast, if it’s the last year’s model, plenty of people may have sat and slept on it ‘breaking it in’. You’ll have to ask the sales person to find this out. “So how do I do that online?” you ask. This is where online reviews come in! Unless the mattress was released last week, there’s bound to be dozens if not 100s of customer reviews for any high-quality mattress. You read these reviews and get a reasonably accurate idea about how firm the mattress is, how cool/warm it is, etc. etc. The obvious advantage of buying online is the price advantage. Online prices are cheaper than in-store prices for majority of the mattresses, spend a couple of hours online, jot down the prices of mattresses you like; then go to a couple of local mattress stores, do your price comparison, and you’ll see what I mean! Even the best memory foam mattresses are generally cheaper online than in-store.
Warning #1: Bigger is not always better!
For somethings, there’s no doubt that bigger is better. But for mattresses, this isn’t always the case. Mattresses start at about 6 inches of thickness and go all the way up to 15.5″ in thickness. 15.5″ definitely sounds very luxurious and comfortable. But, such a mattress can give rise to unexpected challenges like “your dog having to get a running start from the hallway to be able to jump on to the bed”. No, we’re not exaggerating. Sure, such thick mattresses look gorgeous and most of them feel great as well, but the height can be problematic from a practical standpoint. However, like my father says “every complex problem has a simple solution”.
If you must buy a mattress taller than 10 inches;
- buy a low-profile box springs: conventional box springs are ~9″ tall. Nowadays, box springs come as low as 4″ in height. Go for one of these and you can have a mattress as tall as you want!
- buy a low-profile platform bed. Platform beds come ready with horizontal slats eliminating the need for box springs. You can place your thick mattress directly on the platform
Warning #2: Beware of Black Friday door busters!
We don’t mean to sound negative, but you already probably know that some of the stuff that go on sale as Black Friday door buster items are those the stores are struggling to sell at regular prices. Some may have poor customer satisfaction, some, may be older, obsolete models. This is where you have to do your due diligence and should not be lazy and pick up whatever memory foam mattress that is on sale. This can be a huge mistake. Before Black Friday comes, you need to have a very good idea about the type/brand of mattress you want to purchase. If that particular brand/model goes on sale as a door buster, you jump all over it and buy it; but if a crappy model goes on sale, you think twice and withdraw from the offer. You’d rather spend $200 extra and enjoy that for 10 years rather than save $200 and regret every waking hour for the next 10 years!
Pre-Black Friday Memory Foam Mattress Deals
If you’re in the market for a mattress deal, you don’t even need to wait till the big shopping weekend (i.e. Black Friday and Cyber Monday). There are plenty of online mattress deals going on right now. Will the deals be better during Black Friday and Cyber Monday? Probably yes, but the price cuts are unlikely to be 100s of dollars because considerable amounts have been shaven off these mattress price tags already.
