iDealBed 4i Custom Adjustable Bed Review – Major PROS
We like to start off this iDealBed adjustable bed review with its major positives. Then we discuss the minor positives followed by the major drawbacks. Hope you’ll find this iDealBed 4i Custom review educational and helpful.
Update 2021: While we still love the iDealBed 4i, newer and more feature-rich adjustable bases are being constantly introduced to the market. One could argue that some models like the Nectar and even the Motion in A Box bases are better than the iDealBed. We urge you to visit our reviews on the best adjustable beds on https://bedroom.solutions/best-adjustable-beds/ to obtain the newest information on top rated adjustable bed frames.
The following specs are the important ones that can positively influence your decision on purchasing an iDealBed 4i Custom adjustable base
Has Leggett & Platt components!
The idealbed 4i is powered by a Leggett & Platt motor. As this consumer points out the setup guide, the owner’s manual, warranty, support telephone number etc. are all from Leggett & Platt. From what we know, the frame is imported and iDealBed assembles it in the USA, with some ‘assistance’ from Leggett & Platt; that’s why the warranty, owner’s manual, customer support etc. come from L&P.
iDealBed 4i Custom adjustable beds are assembled in the USA
The iDealBed 4i bed frame is designed and ‘engineered’ in the U.S.A. In other words, parts are imported and only assembly takes place in the USA.
Ultra Quiet Lift Motors with up to 850 lb lift capacity
Adjustable beds that come under the brand name of “Leggett & Platt” market them as “Whisper Quiet”; iDealBed have opted for the term ‘Ultra quiet’. It’s the same motor, so their ‘quietness’ is equally good!
Don’t take our word for it, check out what this buyer has to say.
The 850 lb limit deserves special mention because certain adjustable foundations like this Craftmatic Legacy have lifting capacities as low as 450 pounds. They give you the option of upgrading to 600 pounds at an extra cost, which really sucks. In that sense, the ultra-quiet L&P motors with a 850 lb lifting capacity of the i4 Custom bed deserves praise.
Full body massage including ‘wave’ feature
Most adjustable bases come with massage nowadays. But on most models in this price range, the massage is nothing more than an annoying vibration. On such low-quality models, the massage motors located at the bottom of the base are unable to produce a strong enough massage through the mattress. But the iDealBed massage function is as good as that on a high-end model.
The massage has 3 speeds (like all L&P models do), wave, pulse, continuous and timer modes. So for example, if you want the massage to turn off exactly after 30 minutes (after you fall asleep), just set the timer for 30 minutes and it’ll automatically turn off without making you worry about staying up to turn the massage off 🙂 BTW, the ‘wave’ feels like a rolling massage that flows up and down from head to foot and vice versa. They call it ‘iDeal Smart Wave Massage’.
IMPORTANT: Don’t expect the iDealBed 4i to compete with your personal masseur. After all, the massage motors have to work through a 8 – 12 inch thick mattress. You’ll see that some people found the massage feature to be amazing while others did not get a strong massage through their 12″ thick memory foam mattresses. This is true not only for this particular adjustable bed, but for any adjustable bed.
It’s just common sense; how can you expect to feel any massage through 12 inches of mattress? Bottom line is that you shouldn’t buy this bed, purely for its massage function, especially if you have a very thick and firm mattress.
4i Custom comes pre-assembled; no tools required
This 74 year-old man assembled it almost single-handedly. Assembling adjustable beds used to be a full-day job a couple of years ago. But starting about 2016-17, manufacturers started producing these 5-minute-assembly adjustable beds. Several models other than the 4i Custom, like the German-made Hofish, Sven and Son Classic, Blissful Nights, Classic Brands adjustable bed and even the low-profile L&P Raven come pre-assembled. Simply put, the 4i comes with the entire base ‘folded’ in half. You just take it out of the box, ‘unfold’ it, secure the two halves together and screw the legs in. It really is that simple.
3-preset memory positions
Zero Gravity, Anti-Snore, and Flat positions
2-customizable memory positions
More would have been better. Some models have as many as 6 memory positions.
Leggett & Platt Quality for iDealBed Price
Hope we don’t offend iDealBed when we say that. But that’s the bottom line!
The choice is yours…
- You can buy a very similar bed with the Leggett & Platt brand name for $500 – 1000 extra depending on the size (twin XL, full, queen, king, California split-king etc.).
- You can buy a similar bed under the brand name of iDealBed for much less
MANDATORY TASK
iDealBed 4i Custom Reclining Bed – ‘Minor’ Specs
The following specs are NOT all that important. Although the manufacturer may speak ‘big’ of them, they’re found in almost all adjustable beds of modern times. These should NOT influence your purchasing decision.
Infinite head and foot adjustable positions
The manufacturer boasts that the head can be raised up to 70° and the feet can be raised up to 45°. Give or take a few degrees, there’s hardly any electric bed that can’t do this nowadays.
Wireless Ergonomic Back-Lit Remote
Tthe manufacturer boasts on the looks and ease of use of their wireless remote controller. But, to be quite honest, this remote ain’t pretty at all. However, I wouldn’t worry about the looks and feel of the remote; it does the job of controlling the bed positions. If it looked modern and fancy, awesome; it doesn’t in this case, and that’s perfectly fine with me.
Fits inside your existing bed
Yes, just remove the slats of your platform bed and place it in the middle of the headboard, footboard and side rails.
4 USB ports
Two on either side, to charge your phone, iPad, iPod etc. etc. in this age of smart devices. Again, most models nowadays come with these; even the entry-level ones.
Under-bed night light
This is also becoming a standard feature since around 2017
Power failure? Worry not!
The 4i Custom bed comes with an emergency battery back-up power box that is powered by two 9-volt batteries. This would make sure that your bed won’t get stuck in an upright position in case of a rare power failure.
Three Cons/Drawbacks of the iDealBed 4i Custom Base
No adjustable bed is perfect, especially when you’re buying it at this low price tag.
NO Pillow Tilting
Here’s an iDealBed adjustable base WITH pillow tilting. We discuss the benefits of pillow tilting in great detail elsewhere.
NO Wall Hugging
The 4i Custom is not a wall hugger. In other words, when you raise the head of the bed, you’re being moved away from the headboard, taking you away from your nightstand. This makes it a little difficult to reach for something on the nightstand/bed-side table. Reaching back awkwardly can potentially sprain your neck/back. But if you’re young and athletic or you don’t have/use a nightstand, the 4i works perfectly well. Here’s an iDealBed WITH wall hugging.
Not a deck-on-deck design
Premium-grade models like the Leggett and Platt Premier and Reverie 9T come with a deck-on-deck design. Heck… even the iDealBed Designer iD5 (aka Leggett & Platt Designer D-222) has a deck-on-deck design. On such models, the lower deck covers the mechanical parts underneath the foundation. Additionally, it gives those beds a really nice, rich look! This is NOT a deal breaker; we’re just listing it here to make our iDealBed 4i Custom adjustable bed review as comprehensive as possible 😉 Even the Prodigy 2.0 which we worship so much isn’t a deck-on-deck model.
Conclusion on the iDealBed 4i Custom Adjustable Bed
Other than the lack of wall hugging and pillow tilting, the iDealBed 4i Custom adjustable bed is full of positives for its price.
If you’ve read our adjustable bed reviews, you know that we don’t recommend cheap beds for many reasons. However, this is an exception, it’s a USA-made high quality adjustable bed with a Leggett & Platt motor for the price of a China-made brand.
If you don’t want to invest on a high-end adjustable bed, grab this with both hands.
How many legs are on the queen-size idealbed 4i custom base
Hi Wilson,
The queen has 6 legs. The middle ones are NOT right in the middle, they’re a little closer to the top legs than the bottom ones. This is because of the location of the ‘flex’ on the upper body/head section.
Hope all is clear!

I just bought an IdealBed, 4i and they informed me that it is not manufactured, or the steel frame is a Leggett & Platt. Why are you advertising that?
Hi Vicki,
I apologize for the misunderstanding. We have rectified the wording to eliminate any misinterpretations. The motor is indeed from Leggett & Platt but the bed frame isn’t. The steel frame is imported and assembled in the USA. Hope it is clear now.
Again, I apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you.

Question #1: We are purchasing an all Latex mattress that is 9″ thick and we plan to put in on top of an iDealbed 4i.
Unfortunately, to fit into our A-America bedroom suite, we need the top of the mattress to sit at 27″ so that it covers the bottom of the headboard panel and is in a good position with regard to the nightstands. I plann to use longer legs and/or leg extenders so that the adjustable bed platform is at 18″ from the floor. Do you see any problem with this?
Question #2: are there any “frames” that are made that will enable us to block the view of the 4i mechanism from 4″ off the floor to 18″ off the floor? Any suggestions as to where to find something like this? (we can add 4″ legs to the frame, if necessary). Since the 4i mechanism has it’s own feet, the frame won’t need to support any weight but its own.
Hi Harvey,
Thank you for the great questions. Let me address them below:
Question 1: Excellent choice with the latex mattress! I wouldn’t be surprised if it ended up being more expensive than your adjustable base 🙂
Yes, leg extenders are the best solution I can think of as well! It’s best to contact iDealBed to check if they have extendable legs tailor-made for your bed. Make sure you give them the year of manufacture because models from different years can have slightly different configurations.
Question 2: There are Bed side rails like these. I have personally never tried them, but I think this is what you’re looking for. I’m not recommending the above product, just pointing you in the direction of the right product. Please do due diligence before ordering.
Hope our answers were helpful, would be happy to help you clarify any other concerns you many have!

I am looking for a suitable adjustable bed for my disabled brother,58 years. He is losing mobility due to many orthopedic setbacks..plus wt.gain.I want him to have this bed into his Silver Senior years. He is mobile-no devices.Ty
Hi Madelyn,
Hope this reply isn’t coming to you too late. There are many models that would suit him. The most expensive ones like the Glideaway Elevation offer a variety of comforts with its unique Elevation Lift feature. The only negative I see in this bed is its price. Since your brother is decently mobile, I don’t think you’ll need a sit-to-stand type of adjustable base; you can read up on that on our page for best beds for seniors. If you’re on a budget, you can scroll down that page to find some really popular, yet budget-friendly adjustable bed models that cost less than $500 for a twin-XL model.
Having said all that, to be quite frank, I’m not sure I have done a good job answering your query. I think your choice on the mattress will be more critical than the adjustable bed. Since you say he has orthopedic conditions, I recommend you pick a mattress recommended for such conditions. Since I have limited information and I’m not qualified to give you medical advice, I can’t be very specific, but generally, a medium-firm to firm mattress should work well for your brother. Even though a soft to medium-soft mattress can be more comfortable in the short-term, I doubt it will help him in the long run!
Hope this was at least a tad bit helpful.

Will the ideal bed 4i fit inside of a bed frame
How would I go about purchasing replacement parts for this bed? The piston that raises and lowers the head of the bed is completely broken from a move.
@Davis,
Thanks for reaching out to us. I would suggest you to contact iDealBed customer support on https://www.dealbeds.com/customer-services/
Good luck!

Will the iDealBed 4i Custom adjustable bed work with the 9″ “Sleep on Latex” mattress? Thanks…
@Pat,
Hi, if you’re referring to latex mattresses from https://sleeponlatex.com/, yes, those will likely work with the iDealBed 4i Custom bed. Our team has no experience with the particular brand you’re referring to. But, in general, all latex and memory foam mattresses work with adjustable beds. It’s usually the innerspring ones that cannot be recommended as adjustable mattresses. In fact, the best adjustable mattresses are those made from latex.
The 9 inches also work great. If your mattress is very thick, like over 13″, the chances of you really feeling the massage feature will be slim. If you think about it, the massage motors have to ‘massage’ you through a 12″ mattress; that is nearly impossible. Even though people can be attracted towards a thick mattress, I think 9-10 inches is the sweet spot.
In summary, you’ve picked latex, you’ve picked 9″ –> that is an awesome winning combination for an adjustable mattress.
Hope that helps!
We look forward to hearing from you on your new adjustable bed + latex mattress combo.
